No I am not talking about me. I thought I would get that in before you did. This week I have come to realise how the simple things can make so much difference. We should welcome them and celebrate them just as much as the big wins. I am realising they are just as important; maybe more.
Recently I have felt that my life has been work and home. Shopping and chores at the weekend. Yes I know there are plenty of others that are in the same boat. I’m not asking for sympathy. I’m just saying that is has been a little depressing. Mundane. Fridays I work from home and it has been a blessing in helping with the work life balance. How I hate that phrase. I am so lucky that my boss has no issue if I have to leave my lap top for an hour or two to get things done. He knows I make the time up. That flexibility can sometimes be so important.
So Friday I wanted to pop to my local storage company where I have a small unit. It homes my old paperwork that the tax man requires I keep, my stock, supplies and a few other bits and pieces. I had to drop a few things off and grab a couple of items. What time we left would be dependant on how husband was feeling. So mid morning we loaded up the van and headed out. We may as well do the recycling on the way back from the lock up as we are passing husband says. Yep no problem. He wanted to go to the garden centre and asked if I wanted to be dropped off before he went. Nope lets go.
It wasn’t an amble round the centre; hubby wasn’t feeling that mobile. Plus that would be dangerous as I love a house plant. Not that our home is great for keeping them. Its either direct sun light or no light. Seed trays and compost in the trolley and its off to get the seeds for the allotment. I grabbed the red cabbage seeds he was after and spotted a packet of cress. Hell yeah lets have some of them. I was transported back to my childhood, growing them on the window ledge on damp kitchen towel to have in egg mayo sandwiches.

We were out for just over an hour but it made me feel so much better. Not only had I crossed a couple of jobs off my to do list but I felt like some of my mojo had reappeared. Who would have known? It was totally unexpected. Would it last? No idea. Was I going to make the most of it? Well lets not get ahead of ourselves. Home, lunch and back to work.
Did the motivation last? Actually it did. Sunday I decided to tackle one of the bigger jobs on my list. It is a job that my husband would have done that is now up to me. I split it down as it required work to three areas in doors. So one is done. It felt good. How can an hour trip out have made so much difference? Maybe it was just because it was a change to the normal routine. I am not saying getting the packet of cress seeds was responsible. Oh wouldn’t it be nice if motivation could be linked to something so simple. I even picked up my knitting needles over the weekend which is something I haven’t done much of lately.
So if you get chance to do something spontaneous, no matter how small, do it. It can make a difference; more that you may think. I know that I am going to do that going forward. No more feeling guilty if I take an hour out of my Friday to nip out with hubby. Leaving a chore for another day to have a quick drink with a friend. I am going to book my trip to have a hair cut which I have been putting off since way before Christmas.
The first batch of cress is sewn. Am I excited? Oh yeah. I am going to try and embrace the simple things more often. I didn’t realise how they could make such a difference. I guess it goes to prove the saying ‘every little helps.’ E x
